Selenium

Selenium is one of the more important minerals because it functions as an antioxidant in your body. It forms an uncommon amino acid, selenocysteine that is needed for the functioning of over twenty enzymes. One of the best known of those twenty enzymes is selenoprotein P which have antioxidant properties characteristic in other selenoproteins. Numerous studies show that a high selenium level in our body has a direct protective effect on our health.

It has been discovered that two polymorphisms are present in the gene SEPP-1, which is responsible for selenium transport while also influencing the selenium levels in our body. Scientists have also discovered that selenium levels can be determined from our BMI. An unfavourable combination of genetic makeup and your BMI can affect the levels of selenium by up to 24 mcg. In this case, an appropriate dietary adaption is recommended.
